New white paper to support school libraries navigating parental involvement and access challenges

“The Library Corporation — March 3, 2026. The Library Corporation (TLC) is pleased to announce the release of a new white paper: “Guardian Engagement: Managing Family Preferences Within School Library Collections.” This white paper outlines a practical, library-centered approach to managing family preferences while protecting equitable access to school library collections.

Guardian Engagement — a free, opt-in only feature of Library.Solution for Schools — was developed in direct partnership with Texas school districts seeking a better way to respond to parental concerns without placing additional administrative burdens on librarians or limiting access for entire student populations. The result led to a solution that preserves professional autonomy, supports individualized family preferences, and maintains student access to diverse collections.

The white paper draws on TLC’s work supporting 15 school districts using using Guardian Engagement with Library.Solution for Schools across the United States, including 11 districts in Texas, two in Virginia, one in Louisiana, and one in Maryland. These districts represent a wide range of community needs, staffing realities, and policies that school librarians are facing.

“While we had not had as many book challenges as other school districts, we wanted to be proactive in finding a solution,” said a library director from a district using Guardian Engagement. “It was encouraging that TLC was already working on the issue with Texas schools… After implementing Guardian Engagement and informing librarians, we posted all the information for parents in our student handbooks and on the school library webpages.”

The director went on to say: “It has been an excellent way to offer parents an opportunity to be engaged with their students in their library reading. Frankly, we have had only a small percentage of parents take advantage of the options, but it is comforting to know we have these in place, and we encourage our librarians to point out the options in any first conversation they may have with a parent who has a concern about their student’s reading choices.”

The white paper explores how Guardian Engagement:

  • Reduces manual workflows and eliminates paper permission slips for reading materials.
  • Supports individual family preferences without system-wide collection removals.
  • Reinforces librarians’ collection development choices while offering a structured, opt-out pathway for families.
  • Preserves equitable access to diverse collections for the student body at large.

“School librarians are being asked to navigate increasingly complex expectations with limited time and resources,” said Annette Murphy, CEO and co-founder for TLC. “Guardian Engagement reflects TLC’s commitment to listening first and building solutions alongside our customers. By partnering directly with school districts, we’re able to create tools that support librarians in their day-to-day work.”

The Guardian Engagement white paper is available now.
