AI is often promoted as a way to reduce workloads, allowing employees to focus on higher-value and more engaging tasks. However, research published in Harvard Business Review shows that AI tools rarely reduce work and often intensify it. In the study, employees worked faster, handled a wider range of tasks, and extended their work into additional hours, frequently without being asked.
While this may seem beneficial, the effects can be unsustainable. The increased pace and scope of work can lead to workload creep, cognitive fatigue, burnout, and poorer decision-making. Initial productivity gains may eventually result in lower-quality work, higher turnover, and other organizational challenges.
