World Happiness Report 2026: Global Wellbeing and Social Media

The World Happiness Report 2026 is now live, revealing the latest insights into global wellbeing. This year’s report examines how social media and digital environments are reshaping the social foundations of wellbeing.

The newest data reveal life satisfaction is highest at low rates of social media use and lower at higher rates of use, according to data from the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) covering seven internet activities for 15-year-old students in 47 countries.

The evidence shows that frequency, platform design and digital saturation are linked to measurable differences in wellbeing, particularly for younger age groups.

Highlights from this year’s report:

Since 2006-2010, 79 countries have shown significant gains in happiness, while 41 show significant losses.

After Finland, Iceland and Denmark, Costa Rica is the fourth happiest country in the world. It is the highest ranking ever for any Latin American country.

63%

Among girls in Western Europe, heavy users of social media are 63% more likely to report low life satisfaction than light users.
