Via Semafor: “Despite widespread concerns, today’s young people are more empathetic, more open-minded, and smarter than previous generations, scientists argued. US bullying rates and adolescent crime are down; children, contrary to claims about reduced attention spans, are less impulsive. They turn to alcohol and drugs less often. Racist and homophobic attitudes are rarer. Researchers told Scientific American that changes in parenting and teaching styles could be behind the shifts: With parents and schools less harsh, corporal punishment and abuse have been reduced. The apparent rise in mental illnesses may, one psychologist said, be the result of destigmatization and a growing willingness to ask for help; on the negative side, that may have led some children and parents to categorize normal negative feelings as pathological.”
