“The first post began with empathy — not as a warm abstraction but as a precisely situated capacity. Drawing on Mori’s Uncanny Valley, it argued that empathy is proximity-dependent, embodied and multi-sensory, and therefore not reproducible by an algorithm. The point was not sentimental: it was that qualities we recognise clearly, acumen, wit, shrewdness and canny judgement, resist prescription precisely because they emerge from combinations of habit, experience and natural talent that cannot be flattened into a training data set. The post introduced the question that would run through what followed: how do we incite people to use and develop those innate capacities in the face of growing automation?”
